Where do the prices come from, and how often do they update?
Spot prices come from gold-api.com. The site checks for a new price about every 60 seconds, and the price on your screen refreshes every 5 minutes or whenever you tap Refresh.
What is the difference between spot value and scrap value?
Spot value is what the pure metal in your item is worth at today’s market price. Scrap value is what a buyer is likely to pay, which is a percentage of spot. You set that percentage with the payout slider.
Why is my offer lower than spot?
Buyers have to cover testing, refining, overhead and profit, so they pay a percentage of the melt value. Pawn shops usually pay the lowest share; refiners and high-volume buyers usually pay more.
What percentage of spot is a fair offer?
It depends on the type of buyer and how much you are selling. The offer checker next to the calculator rates any offer as low, typical or good so you can compare buyers.
What does 585 or 750 stamped on my jewelry mean?
They show the gold content in parts per thousand: 585 is 14K and 750 is 18K. Look up any stamp with the stamp decoder.
Should I weigh in grams or ounces?
Grams or pennyweight. Gold is priced per troy ounce, which is about 10% heavier than the regular ounce on a kitchen scale. If you do use ounces, choose troy ounces (ozt) in the calculator.
Is my information saved?
No account is needed and nothing you enter is sent to us. Your payout percentage and preferred unit are remembered on your own device. Share links contain your entries in the link itself.
Is this financial advice?
No. The values are estimates for information only. Actual offers depend on the buyer, how they test your items, and the price when you sell.
