A 1 oz American Gold Buffalo contains one troy ounce of pure 24K gold. The US Mint has made it since 2006. It has a $50 face value, but its gold is worth far more. Here's what the gold inside is worth at today's live price.

Common questions

How do I know if my american gold buffalo is gold?

The front shows the profile of a Native American man and the back shows an American bison standing on a mound. The back is marked "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD". It weighs about 31.11 grams and measures 32.7 mm across. Unlike the 22K Gold Eagle, it is almost pure gold, so it weighs almost exactly one troy ounce and is softer and easier to scratch. Keep it in its capsule or tube.

Why does a dealer pay less than melt value?

Dealers buy bullion close to melt value and resell at a premium. The gap covers their costs and profit, and it is usually small for well-known bullion coins.

Is it legal to melt coins?

US rules prohibit melting one-cent and five-cent coins. That rule does not cover dimes, quarters, half dollars, dollars or bullion coins. Most people sell coins whole to a dealer rather than melting them.
